5. Liverpool
Transfer spend: £309.9m
Transfer fees received: £220.5m
Net: £89.4m
Liverpool spent around £50m this summer, as they look to return to the top table of European football. That pales in comparison to the £80m-plus spent by Kenny Dalglish to bring flops like Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Joe Enrique to the club (Kenny did, at least, sign Luis Suarez). On the whole, Liverpool’s spending has been consistently around the £50m mark each year, but they have sold some players, Fernando Torres being the best example, for hefty fees.
