6. Washington, NFL – $750 million by Dan Snyder in 1999
Of all the big spenders on this list, there isn’t one who is more famous for simply being a big spender than Washington owner Dan Snyder, who bought the team after the death of Jack Kent Cooke in 1997.
Nowadays there isn’t a more notorious spender in the NFL than Dan Snyder, who since purchasing the club has made some of the worst free agency moves in NFL history: $55 million to an aging Deion Sanders, $18 million to journeyman Jeff George, $30 million to average safety Adam Archuleta, $31 million to average WR Antwaan Randle-El and a then-record $100 million to Albert Haynesworth, who played himself out of the league.
The team’s struggles in free agency and in the draft have led to just four winning seasons since he Snyder took control of the team.
Snyder has been a subject of controversy in the last few years for refusing to change the nickname of the Washington team, which is considered a racial slur to Native Americans.
