9. Dennis Byrd (DT, New York Jets)
The forced retirement of Dennis Byrd is one of the great tragedies of NFL history. In his first three seasons with the Jets he emerged as one of the premier pass-rushing inside linemen with 27.0 sacks. But a bad tackle when he was just 26 years old caused him to become paralyzed, ending his NFL career and reducing him to a quadriplegic for many years before learning how to stand again.
