6. Denis Irwin
There are a lot of players in today’s game renowned for being hilariously one-footed and one-dimensional, such as Adam Johnson or Antonio Valencia.
No one could ever say this about former Republic of Ireland full back Denis Irwin, who was supremely adept on either side, and his technical ability from set pieces was just another string to his bow.
Also a brilliantly reliable presence in defence, Irwin was a brilliantly versatile player for Sir Alex Ferguson – and Manchester United.
5. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer
The ‘baby-faced assassin’ was renowned as somewhat of a super sub for Manchester United, with his four goals against Nottingham Forest from the bench in February 1999 a particular highlight.
United fans will fondly remember a wonderful finisher, as well as a laughably awful last man challenge on Newcastle United star Rob Lee as he ran clear to prevent the goalscoring opportunity which may have proved a pivotal moment in the Premier League title race of that year.
Now in charge of Norwegian club Molde, Solksjaer is garnering a growing reputation as a manager in his own right, and could one day take the reins at Old Trafford.
