4. Peter Schmeichel
One of the greatest goalkeepers in history, Schmeichel was a formidable presence in net for Manchester United.
Never has the goal seemed smaller for opposition strikers as when one on one with the great Dane, and as well as a massive trophy haul under Ferguson, Schmeichel proved incredibly difficult for the Red Devils to replace, with a succession of shot-stoppers coming and going before the club finally settled on Edwin Van Der Sar in 2001 – sixteen years after Schmeichel left Old Trafford.
3. Roy Keane
Roy Keane was thought of as a hugely expensive signing at the time, costing £3.75 million from Nottingham Forest in summer 1993, but justified the price tag quickly.
Keane was a born leader, and a true driving force behind the team’s attacks.
Before he fell out with Sir Alex Ferguson, he was almost like a second manager on the field, and his work ethic and will to win produced the best out of his team-mates.
His performance against Juventus in the 1999 UEFA Champions League semi final was one of the greatest individual displays by a footballer in history, and though his yellow card ruled him out of the final, his contribution will not be forgotten.
