2. Eric Cantona
Eric Cantona won the old First Division title with Leeds United before becoming a Manchester United talisman and legend in the Premier League era.
Though his legacy is somewhat tarnished by the flying kick on a Crystal Palace fan, Cantona was a vital player for Manchester United, and at one stage seemed to score the winning goal in practically every match.
As well as an impressive list of honours whilst at the club including four Premier League titles and two FA Cups, Cantona’s Old Trafford career was a highlights reel. That goal against Sunderland and the subsequent celebration is still imitated in playgrounds across the land.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
Bought for £12.5m from Sporting Club de Portugal, sold to Real Madrid for £80m. Even on a purely economic level, Ronaldo was a brilliant signing for Manchester United, but the Portuguese flyer produced tremendous performances on the pitch too to become one of the club’s greatest ever players.
Graduating from sprightly winger to goalscoring machine during his time under Ferguson, before the rise of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo was genuinely the best player in the world for a spell, winning the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or in 2008 before the awards were merged.
He tops our list.
