Andros Townsend becomes an international class winger
Even after the start of the season, Andros Townsend was derided as something of a poor man’s Arjen Robben due to a propensity to cut inside onto his left foot and shoot from anywhere – often waywardly.
Townsend took 27 shots in the Premier League before his first – a lucky cross – went into the net, but the Tottenham Hotspur winger has now dismissed that aforementioned perception of his game with a series of dangerous performances.
The turning point was his call up for England, with Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions in somewhat of a winger injury crisis, and Townsend took his chance brilliantly, scoring on his debut and showing fearless running with the ball and impressive skill with both feet throughout.
Since then, the 22 year-old has emerged as the Spurs player who seems most likely to create a goalscoring opportunity, and is deservedly keeping €30 million summer signing Erik Lamela out of the side.
