Liverpool wing back formation reaps dividends
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers faced a dilemma upon Luis Suarez’s return from suspension.
He needed to fit both the Uruguayan and England forward Daniel Sturridge into the Reds side as two of the club’s best players, but with both declaring a preference to be deployed centrally, compromises had to be made elsewhere.
A 4-4-2 was out of the question given Rodgers’ reluctance to cede control of the midfield, meaning that in order to keep three players in the middle of the park, it was the wingers that had to be sacrificed.
Rodgers’ solution was a 3-5-2 formation, with Glen Johnson and Aly Cissokho providing the width as attacking wing backs.
So far it has worked a treat.
The Reds may be the only side playing with three at the back in the Premier League, but it is hard to argue with the results.
Six wins and two draws from their opening nine matches places Liverpool second in the table behind Arsenal, and five places ahead of their finish last season.
What’s more, Rodgers’ side are playing some of their best football in years.
