There have been some extraordinary transfers in Premier League history, with big clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all guilty of some bizarre decisions. Here’s our top ten.
10. Mikael Silvestre (Manchester United to Arsenal)
Manchester United and Arsenal rarely perform direct transfer business.
When Mikael Silvestre moved from Old Trafford to Emirates Stadium in August 2008, he was the first player to go between the clubs since Frank Stapleton in 1981.
It was easy to see why Manchester United would let Silvestre go. Why Arsenal signed him remained a mystery, with the France international well beyond his peak when he arrived in north London.
Still, at least he paved the way for Robin Van Persie to sign for the Red Devils in 2012.
