1. Bebe (Vitoria Guimaraes to Manchester United)
Portuguese forward Bebe grew up in a homeless shelter near Lisbon, but showed promise as a footballer and was signed by Vitoria de Guimaraes on a free transfer in July 2010.
In August 2010, Manchester United spent €9 million (approximately £7.4m at the time) to activate his minimum fee release clause and bring him to Old Trafford.
Quite why they spent such a sum on a player they could have had for nothing just five weeks prior to their move remains a mystery.
Quite why they signed a player who has only been good enough to make two Premier League appearances for the club – one a ten minute appearance from the bench, and the other as a substitute who was later substituted – will also presumably never be known.
Bebe has been sent out on loan every season since, and looks to have no Old Trafford future.
