6. Nuri Sahin (Real Madrid to Liverpool – loan)
Nuri Sahin was a brilliant deep-lying playmaker for Borussia Dortmund prior to his transfer to Real Madrid, where he struggled to get into the team ahead of the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira.
It was then something of a coup that Liverpool managed to lure Sahin on loan to Anfield in summer 2012, but the Turkey international failed to convince Brendan Rodgers that he was worthy of a place in the Reds line-up ahead of Joe Allen.
Sahin has since returned to Borussia Dortmund – again on loan – and is once again proving himself one of the best midfielders in Europe.
It’s incredibly difficult to explain why Rodgers failed to rate Sahin. Perhaps his name was in one of the envelopes.
