1. Andy Carroll (Newcastle United to Liverpool)
Liverpool scout: “Kenny Dalglish, we need a new striker. What qualities should we look for?”
King Kenny: “He needs to be massive, and good at heading.”
Liverpool scout: This isn’t the 1990s anymore, Kenny! Technical quality and work rate is vital now!
King Kenny: “I don’t care what you think! I’m paying exactly £15 million less than Fernando Torres costs Chelsea and he will be a bargain!”
This fictional tale may not be how Andy Carroll ended up costing Liverpool £35 million when they bought him from Newcastle United in January 2011, but it is as good an explanation as anything else offered.
Carroll scored 11 goals in 58 appearances for Liverpool before being sold to West Ham for £15m last summer – less than half Liverpool initial outlay.
