5. Bebe (Vitoria Guimaraes to Manchester United)
Portuguese striker Bebe had humble beginnings, with much of his childhood spent in a homeless shelter near Lisbon. Football offered him an outlet, and his talent resulted in him being picked up by Portuguese club Vitoria de Guimaraes in July 2010 for nothing.
Just five weeks later, Manchester United spent €9 million (approximately £7.4m at the time) activating his minimum fee release clause.
We reiterate: a month previously, the Red Devils could have signed Bebe for nothing. Instead they paid €9 million on a player not good enough for the Old Trafford ranks, and that pointless outlay makes him one of the worst transfers in Premier League history.
