Friedel says Pellegrini should think very carefully before dumping the England No.1.
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has had a turbulent season so far, with high profile mistakes in the defeats to both Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
As a result there is a very good chance that manager Manuel Pellegrini will decide to drop the England international for this weekend’s match with Norwich City, replacing the 26-year-old with Costel Pantilimon.
However, Tottenham Hotspur veteran Brad Friedel has sent out a word of warning to the Chilean about what affect being dropped can have on a player.
“All goalkeepers go through ups and down, and goalkeeping is very much a confidence position. Joe has never struck me as a person who lacks in the confidence department.,” Friedel told talkSPORT.
“Being dropped can have a positive effect, but that depends how you take being dropped. If you sulk and stop doing your work, it’s going to have an adverse effect. If you knuckle down and work even harder and take your chance when you get in again, it can have a positive effect.
“You just never know with these things. That’s why it’s not as easy as, ‘right, we’re going to drop Joe Hart’ because you don’t want to lose the best Joe Hart because the best Joe Hart is England’s number one.”
It would be a difficult decision for Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson, as the 66-year-old would almost certainly prefer the nation’s No.1 to be playing regularly in a World Cup year.
If the team are to have any success at next year’s tournament in Brazil then people like Hart have to be in good form and currently that is not the case.
