Chiriches is likely to be on his way to White Hart Lane very soon.
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal for their fifth new signing of the summer with an £8.5m move for Steaua Bucharest centre-back Vlad Chiriches, reports the Guardian.
Steaua manager Laurentiu Reghecampf has admitted that the player is leaving and that it will be the highest ever transfer the Romanian side have been involved in.
“The two clubs have agreed to transfer him. I’m very happy for him,” Reghecampf was quoted in the Guardian.
“I can not say the amount for which [he was] transferred, but it is very high. It will be the most expensive transfer in the history of Steaua.”
Tottenham have been looking for a replacement for Steven Caulker since letting the England international leave for Cardiff City.
With William Gallas also being released this summer Spurs are short at the back, with just captain Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen available.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas has also been open about the fact that Chiriches should soon be a player at White Hart Lane.
“Vlad Chiriches, there is an interest in the player,” the 35-year-old told Sky Sports.
“I’m telling you we have looked to strengthen our back-line with the departure of Steven Caulker, last year we had Younes [Kaboul] injured for the season but we had five, so we are looking for the position and we are going to go ahead with our re-strengthening.”
Chiriches has 19 caps for national team Romania and has been a bit of a journeyman during the defender’s career having played for four different clubs in the country and also Benfica.
The 23-year-old is also very versatile as the Romanian can play at full-back and also in midfield.
