Spurs bring in full-back.
Tottenham have signed former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryers from Belgian club Standard Liege – under very fishy circumstances.
England youth full-back Fryers quit United to join Liege just six months ago, having spent the summer training with Spurs.
It is understood that Tottenham had agreed terms with Fryers in August and were close to signing the 20-year-old on a free transfer.
But the North London club would have been forced to pay the Red Devils around £6m in compensation – decided by a tribunal – because Fryers is under 23.
Spurs have now landed the full-back for around half that fee and the speedy star will initially link up with Tottenham’s development squad as he looks to win a place in boss Andre Villas-Boas’s first-team plans.
“We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Standard Liege for the signing of Zeki Fryers,” a statement on Spurs’ official website read.
“The young defender, capped by England at Under-16, 17 and 19 level, began his career at Manchester United before joining Standard Liege last summer.”
