Spurs could swap Assou-Ekotto for Roma’s Federico Balzaretti.
Tottenham and Roma have discussed a complicated swap deal involving full-backs Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Federico Balzaretti, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The two clubs have reportedly been negotiating a deal for Erik Lamela for a fortnight, with the Argentine due in London on Tuesday to finalise a move to Spurs.
Spurs director of football Franco Baldini arrived from Roma this summer and still enjoys a solid relationship with the Stadio Olimpico outfit.
And during the discussions for Lamela, the possibility of swapping Balzaretti for Assou-Ekotto has emerged.
The Cameroonian is surplus to requirements at Spurs and has not featured in the squad for any of the club’s three matches this term, with boss Andre Villas-Boas preferring Danny Rose at left-back, with Kyle Naughton as back-up.
Balzaretti, 31, arrived at Roma last summer and made 25 Serie A appearances last term.
Di Marzio says the deal is complicated and still in its infancy but could yet happen in the final days of the transfer window.
