The north London club want Neto from Zenit.
Zenit St. Petersburg defender Luis Neto has emerged as a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur as manager Andre Villas-Boas looks for a replacement for Steven Caulker, reports Record.
Caulker made the switch to Cardiff City this summer and with William Gallas having also been released from White Hart Lane, Spurs are left with just three centre-backs.
An injury to Jan Vertonghen – picked up in pre-season – has made the north London club’s need to sign a new defender even more desperate.
Although new signing Etienne Capoue can operate in the back four, the Frenchman is more useful as a defensive midfielder.
Neto has been making several changes of club in the past two years, with the 25-year-old only having been in Russia for six months after moving from Italian club Siena.
Previously the Portugal international was back in the defender’s home country with Nacional and just 12 months before that Neto was plying his trade at fellow Portuguese club Varzim.
With three caps for the national side and a journeyman career of late that has seen the centre-back gain experience in the Europa League, Serie A and the Primeira Liga, Tottenham could be signing a potential bargain.
Neto is relatively unknown in England and football website transfermarkt.com rates the player’s value at £5.3m – despite the defender’s relatively young age.
Spurs have been very active in the transfer market so far this summer, having already signed four players at a combined cost of £59m and broken the club’s record transfer twice.
