The Belgian, who spent last season on loan with Southampton, has also been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, however Daily Star reports the North London club are in pole position to snare the 26-year-old.
However, Southampton are keen to sign the former Ajax man on a permanent deal, and Saints boss Ronald Koeman is quoted by Daily Star as saying that the player wants to remain at St Mary’s.
“The player likes to stay, we like to keep the player but it’s a little difficulty at the moment with Atletico Madrid, I have a good hope he will stay for Southampton.”
With Atletico Madrid defender Miranda close to finalising a deal with Serie A giants Inter Milan, manager Diego Simeone may want to keep hold of the 47-times capped Belgium star.
Tottenham are believed to remain keen on a deal for Alderweireld, but Mauricio Pochettino’s hopes of securing the defender will hinge on Atletico Madrid’s stance on the player.
