Spurs capture German star ahead of North London rivals Arsenal.
We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Germany Under-21 captain Lewis Holtby to join the Club in July from Bundesliga side Schalke, subject to a medical.
The creative midfielder began his professional career with Alemannia Aachen and his impressive performances in the German second division soon caught the attention of a number of top-flight Bundesliga sides before he made the move to Schalke in the summer of 2009.
He enjoyed loan spells with Bochum and Mainz prior to making his breakthrough at Schalke. To date, he has made 75 appearances for the Gelsenkirchen-based club in all competitions, scoring 11 times as well as earning three caps for the senior German national side.
Surprise and shock filled the office as soon as news filtered through (officially) of Spurs landing Schalke star Lewis Holtby. Once again, Tottenham have managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat, beating Arsenal to another player after Jan Vertonghen opted to move to White Hart Lane rather than the Emirates Stadium.
But Holtby has chosen the wrong side of North London for a number of reasons;
1) As an enthusiastic, technically gifted youngster, the 22-year-old would perfectly fit into Arsene Wenger’s system at the Emirates. Holtby’s first team appearances would no doubt be slightly problematic, given the likes of Cazorla, Arteta, Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Podolski already there.
2) As German Under-21 captain, Wenger had another chance to add depth to his collage of captains. The Verminator, Andre Arshavin, Tomas Rosicky, Aaron Ramsey, Ju-Yung Park (if he still is on the Arsenal books that is)
3) Finally, Wenger had made his intentions clear today by publicly marking out Holtby as a potential signing. The German should have read the paper, or read Fanatix, and held onto the possibility of playing for a team that will finish above Tottenham. Eighteen years and counting…
