The Togo striker was eliminated from the competition in South Africa last Sunday and Spurs set a deadline of 3pm on Friday for him to report back for duty.
But the 28-year-old did not arrive back until 6pm even after the club sent a private jet to retrieve the former Real Madrid and Arsenal forward.
Boss Andre Villas-Boas left Adebayor on the bench for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United, despite Spurs’ lack of a recognised striker.
The Portuguese confirmed that the club intervened to bring to bring Adebayor back to London but said the player had ‘some issues’ to resolve.
“Yes, (we sent a jet to get him),” the Spurs manager is quoted as saying by Sporting Life.
“He arrived in Luton (on Friday) around 6 o’clock and then joined the team at the hotel.”
“It was obviously good to have him,” said Villas-Boas, who brought Adebayor on in the second half.
“He helped the team get the result so it is good to get him back.
“It’s very difficult. First he was authorised to come back on Friday. Some issues arose that have put that comeback in jeopardy, but he still was in time to come back and make an impact from the bench.”
