Spurs hope England forward will tempt Villa to sell Benteke.
Tottenham have offered Jermain Defoe plus cash in a bid to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.
The Daily Mirror allege that Spurs offered 30-year-old Defoe to the Midlands outfit two weeks ago in an attempt to beat off competition from Atletico Madrid to land the 22-year-old Belgian.
Villa have so far rejected the chance to the chance to sign the England international but could reconsider if Benteke rejects the club’s new long-term contract.
Atletico, meanwhile, have identified Benteke as their top target to replaced Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao, who joined Monaco for £50m last week.
Boss Diego Simeone and general director Miguel Angel Gil Marin reportedly have reportedly held talks with Villa and want an answer within ten days.
Defoe scored 19 goals in all competitions for Spurs last season but found the net just twice once after Boxing Day and is now regarded as surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane, despite signing a new three-year deal last summer.
The former West Ham striker, valued at around £7m, has also been offered to other Premier League clubs but his £70,000-a-week wages are believed to be putting off interested parties.
The Daily Mail, however, reports that Spurs are willing to break the bank to land Valencia forward Roberto Soldado…
