The player will leave Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala for a Russian league record £30m, just seven months after first joining.
Reports coming out of Russia are confirming that Anzhi Makhachkala’s Willian is finally set to join Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs will pay Anzhi £30m for the Brazilian – a record fee for a Russian Premier League side. The transfer will also stipulate an unspecified percentage sell-on clause.
Willian looked all set to sign at White Hart Lane on Thursday when he completed his medical examination, but complications arose when London rivals Chelsea became involved at the last minute.
Kommersant, Russia’s most reliable daily newspaper report that Willian will remain on a salary of £85,000 per week, the same as his contract at Anzhi dictated.
Whilst Russian sides certainly have a recent history of paying large fees for players, this is the first transfer to break the fee paid by a Russian club – set five years ago when Danny transferred from Dynamo Moscow to Zenit St. Petersburg for £25.5m.
Willian is the latest fist team player to leave in Anzhi’s unexpected summer fire-sale. Anzhi’s president, Russian businessman Suleiman Kerimov (currently valued at £4.5bn), has decided to cut down on the club’s operating costs by 75 per cent.
This means that big-earning Russian internationals Alexander Kokorin, Igor Denisov and Yuri Zhirkov have all been sold to Dynamo Moscow, whilst Lassana Diarra and Mbarak Boussoufa head to Lokomotiv Moscow.
With this signing seemingly wrapped up for Spurs, and the arrival of Roma’s Eric Lamela imminent, the stage seems to be set for Gareth Bale to finally make his long-anticipated move to Real Madrid.
