Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a £5 million move for PSV Eindhoven wonderkid Zakaria Bakkali, who has demanded a move from the Eredivisie club, according to reports from the Metro.
The 18 year-old Belgian, who narrowly missed out on a place in Marc Wilmots’ World Cup squad, is seen as possibly the brightest teenage talent in the Dutch league – but this didn’t stop PSV dropping him from the team after the teenager refused to sign a new contract with the Eindhoven club.
New Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is now set to step in and offer a route out of the club for Bakkali, who fits the bill as the type of talented and exciting young player that Pochettino showed himself to be so adept at developing whilst at Southampton.
Bakkali moved from Standard Liege to PSV when he was 12, rising through the ranks at the club before bursting into the team last season with some virtuoso displays in attacking midfield.
This understandably meant that PSV were keen for Bakkali to commit his long-term future to the club, but the 18 year-old was not quite so keen to be tied down to PSV.
Naturally a wide player, Bakkali is the kind of roaming, creative presence that Pochettino moulded Adam Lallana into being at St Mary’s, the kind of job that Spurs hope he can do with young players such as Bakkali who seem to be forming the bulk of their summer transfer policy.
