6. Jurgen Klinsmann
Spurs pulled off a stunning coup when they signed the German from AS Monaco in summer 1994 but Klinsmann was disliked by rival fans and media alike because of his role in knocking England out of the 1990 World Cup and his reputation as a diver.
But the striker’s sense of humour and sublime talent soon won round the haters and he finished the season with 29 goals before joining Bayern Munich. Klinsmann remained deeply attached to the club and returned on loan in 1997, when his nine league goals in 15 matches helped save Spurs from relegation.
