Everton’s resolve to keep hold of star centre-back John Stones looks set to be tested this summer, with the Metro reporting that Tottenham head a list of clubs interested in the young Englishman.
The 20-year-old broke in to the Toffees first-team last season and impressed so much, he was named in England’s preliminary World Cup squad.
His performances have alerted Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, who are readying a bid, although they will likely need to come up with a substantial fee in order to convince Everton to sell one of their prize assets.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing Stones as a potential alternative to Jan Vertonghen, who has been linked with Barcelona. He has already had one bid rejected but are set to return with a bigger offer for a player signed by David Moyes from Barnsley in January 2013.
As well as Vertonghen’s potential departure, Michael Dawson is ageing, Younes Kaboul has suffered with injuries and Vlad Chiriches is yet to fully convince.
Both of Spurs’ major London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have also shown an interest but if Pochettino can offer guaranteed first-team football then Stones could be tempted to sign up.
