Bale wanted to leave Spurs, AVB didn’t have much choice.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that the constant presence of Real Madrid’s offer for Gareth Bale took it’s toll on the Welsh international.
An intense summer of rumour, speculation and conjecture finally ended as the £85.3m move to Madrid was signed, sealed and delivered on Sunday.
Villas-Boas says that the Spanish Giants’ attention put Spurs in a difficult position.
“The pressure we were subjected to by the player has been intense,” the 35-year-old was quoted by the Telegraph.
“The influence of Real Madrid has been very big and you get to a point where you have to consider if i’’s feasible not to accept an offer and whether you can press on with a player in that state of mind.
“Obviously, we should be happy with the transfer fee that was paid. Players want to win championships and I believe that with Gareth that is within reach.
“At the end of the day, it’s up to a player to decide if he wants to stay or wants to go.”
Tottenham have invested the money received for Bale well, purchasing seven top quality internationals and also very sensibly getting all of their business done before selling the Wales international.
Avoiding the inevitable price inflation that would have followed if club’s had realised Spurs had £85.3m in their back pocket was a shrewd move by the club.
AVB believes transfer issues like Bale’s should be wrapped up well before the season starts, to ensure that the team can concentrate wholly on the season ahead.
“The clubs like it as it is [the Transfer window] but the coaches are of the opinion that the market should be closed earlier,” the Portuguese boss continued.
“The coaches need time to prepare their teams for the season. Most coaches would like it to be open less time and closed earlier; obviously we will have to have further meetings.”
