The north Londoners have not given up hope of signing Mata.
Chelsea’s slump to a 1-2 defeat at home in Champions League on Wednesday night has led many to believe returning manager Jose Mourinho has got the coach’s tactics wrong.
One such error in many people’s eyes is to continuously leave out 2013 PFA Player of the Year nominee Juan Mata and Tottenham Hotspur want the Spaniard to join them in January, according to the Daily Express.
Italian duo Juventus and Napoli are also in the hunt for the 25-year-old; which may be more tempting to Mata due to the high influx of attacking midfielders already at White Hart Lane.
Christian Eriksen impressed for Spurs when the Dane made the 21-year-old’s debut against Norwich City last weekend and Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Sigurdsson are also on the books at the club.
However, a player of Mata’s talent would be difficult to overlook, as the Spain international has helped the Blues to Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League success since joining the club in 2010, as well as picking up a World Cup and European Championship medals on the international stage.
Last season the attacking midfielder played a colossal 64 matches for the west London outfit, but since Mourinho has returned to take the reigns at Stamford Bridge the star is yet to play a full 90 minutes.
Napoli could be an attractive prospect for Mata due to Rafael Benitez’s presence at the club – as when the 53-year-old was temporarily in charge of Chelsea last term the Spaniard ensured the midfield ace was a key player.
