Jan Vertonghen going nowhere, insist Spurs…
Tottenham will not consider selling 26-year-old Belgian international centre-half Jan Vertonghen to Barcelona, claims the Daily Mirror.
Vertonghen joined Spurs from Ajax last summer and had a fantastic first season in the Premier League, quickly establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the country. His ability on the ball, his outstanding aerial threat and impressive array of passing has interested Barcelona, who have been linked with a string of Premier League centre-backs.
The Catalan giants have already had a £34m bid for Chelsea stopper David Luiz rejected, and have lodged a £17m assault on Liverpool’s Daniel Agger. Chelsea are adamant that the former will not be leaving however, and the latter has just been awarded the Anfield vice-captaincy.
While Spurs are concentrating most of their efforts on keeping 24-year-old winger Gareth Bale at the club, they have rubbished suggestions that their other star player will also be heading off to Spain.
Andre Villas-Boas has spent heavily on improving the squad this summer, brining in Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Etiene Capoue and record-signing Roberto Soldado, and will be desperate not to weaken his side by selling his star centre-half.
Barcelona have been desperate to bring in a world-class defender all summer, but have continually rebuffed in their various attempts at bringing in a new face.
