Tottenham have moved to dispel rumours linking star defender Jan Vertonghen with a move to Barcelona this summer.
The Daily Mirror have claimed that new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep the Belgium defender and chairman Daniel Levy has told the player he’s going nowhere.
Levy has informed Vertonghen in no uncertain terms that he will not be sold to Barcelona this summer, and the Spurs chief also wants to tie the 27-year-old down to an improved £60,000-a-week contract, that will also extend the two year period left to run on his current deal.
Vertonghen, who has now left with the Londoners on their pre-season tour of North America, had his contribution questioned by fans and former boss Tim Sherwood last season. However, Spurs’ new head coach Mauricio Pochettino sees the player as an important part of his first-team plans.
The Belgian star joined Spurs from Ajax in 2012, and has since played in 82 games for the North London club, scoring eight goals.
Vertonghen played in all five of his country’s World Cup games this summer, as his team were eventually knocked out by finalists Argentina at the quarter-final stage.
