Alderweireld spent last season on loan with Southampton, and while the Saints are keen to sign the Belgian on a permanent deal, London Evening Standard reports Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has flown to Madrid in an attempt to strike a deal with the La Liga heavyweights.
According to the report, Southampton have the offer to sign Alderweireld £7m, however Atletico included a get-out clause that can see the club pay £1.5m for the chance to sell him for a higher price elsewhere.
Atletico are understood to be demanding a minimum of £10m for the 26-year-old, and Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring the player to White Hart Lane ahead of the new season.
It had been reported that Atletico boss Diego Simeone was keen to keep hold of Alderweireld with Brazilian defender Miranda heading to Inter Milan, but it now seems the player is destined to remain in the Premier League.
Chelsea were also believed to be keen in the 47-times capped Belgium star, but it is understood Jose Mourinho’s interest in the player has now cooled.
