Portuguese may be used in Real’s bid to sign Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.
Real Madrid head-coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Fabio Coentrao has asked to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.
“Nothing has changed with Coentrao, we have to respect his decision because he asked to leave. So he will not play tomorrow,” the Italian told a press conference ahead of Real’s opening La Liga match with Real Betis on Sunday.
Coentrao has been linked with a move to Tottenham as part of Real’s protracted bid to bring Gareth Bale to the Spanish capital.
Some media outlets have claimed Los Blancos want to include the Portugal international, 25, in a world-record deal for the Welshman, while other reports say Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is interested in his compatriot but any move for Coentrao will remain separate.
Spurs are in need of a new left-back, with Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s future in doubt. The 29-year-old has barely featured in pre-season for the North London outfit – with Danny Rose deputising – but joined up with the Cameroon squad this week.
