Spurs set to confirm summer transfer deal for Spain’s record goalscorer ahead of rivals Arsenal.
Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to sign David Villa from FC Barcelona ahead of arch rivals Arsenal, according to a report from Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.
The Spain international has been convinced to move to White Hart Lane after a conversation with manager Andre Villas-Boas.
Regardless of the club’s finishing position in the Premier League, there is clear progress to be seen at Spurs.
Although they are not favourites to finish in the UEFA Champions League positions, with the Gunners a point ahead with a single match left to play, but Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea all already have more points than any team to finish outside the top four in the Premier League era, meaning whichever team finishes fifth may feel rather hard done by.
Villa was long linked with Arsenal, particularly in the January transfer window, but the Gunners moved on to other targets such as Stevan Jovetic due to the Spaniard’s age.
Barca striker Villa is 31 years of age, and whilst still a clinical finisher, he does not possess the pace or strength of some of the best Premier League marksmen.
Still, given the nature of Spurs’ misfiring hitmen Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe, the chance to land a signing of the calibre and reputation of David Villa could be too good an opportunity to pass up.
