Tottenham Hotspur hope £20m bid for star striker will propel them into the UEFA Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur hope to convince Aston Villa to part with brilliant Belgian striker Christian Benteke with a £20 million bid, and could even offer up their own forward Emmanuel Adebayor in part exchange for the 22 year-old, according to the Daily Star.
Spurs cannot fail to have been impressed with how quickly and well Benteke adapted to the physical Premier League last season, and his 19 goals in 32 top flight appearances were instrumental in keeping Villa up, with the club having appeared likely relegation candidates for much of the campaign.
Benteke has certainly fluttered his eyelashes at interest from many of the bigger clubs in the Premier League, and Tottenham are ready to start talks about a £20 million transfer, and willing to offer Adebayor up as a makeweight in the deal.
Unfortunately for the north London side, whilst Adebayor is surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane, his last season for the club hasn’t won him a huge amount of praise and transfer interest, and Tottenham may have to consider a pure cash bid, as they are not looking to offer up Adebayor’s strike partner Jermain Defoe.
“Benteke is one of the players they want,” a Spurs source told the Daily Star.
“Sadly, no one has come in for Adebayor so at the moment so it must be straight cash.
“There’s been talk of Defoe going but why would a club sell a player who can guarantee 15 goals in a season?”
