The north Londoners are after Shakhtar Donetsk’s Bernard.
Brazil international Bernard was a transfer target for Arsenal before joining Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer, but now Tottenham Hotspur want the starlet on-loan, according to the Daily Express.
The South American chose to make the £20m move to Ukraine rather than to the English capital, but has failed to make an impression on the Shakhtar side and could be prepared to make a u-turn.
Bernard’s agent has been tapping up some of Europe’s elite to see who would be prepared to take the 21-year-old on-loan and Spurs have shown interest.
Despite already having a plethora of talent in attacking midfield, new signings Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela have failed to impress since summer transfers and Lewis Holtby is also thought to be unsettled in north London.
New manager Tim Sherwood is desperate to bring in some attacking talent in the January window, especially as Jermain Defoe is leaving White Hart Lane for FC Toronto on February 28.
Sherwood is a big fan of Bernard’s – who has played 15 matches for Shakhtar in all competitions this term and provided seven assists and also has 10 caps for the Brazil national team.
Part of the reason the youngster wants to leave the Ukrainian champions is because the winger is worried about missing out on the final 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup.
Bernard is a small figure who relies upon skill and technique and has the ability to play anywhere in attacking midfield – although generally prefers to operate from the left wing.
