Spurs are keen on signing Roma’s Lamela either way.
Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with AS Roma over the signing of starlet Erik Lamela and want the winger even if Gareth Bale doesn’t move to Real Madrid, according to goal.com.
Spurs aim to keep hold of their Welsh superstar but are aware that the 24-year-old could be tempted to Spain and see Lamela as the ideal replacement.
However, even if the north London outfit convince Bale to stay the club still wants the 21-year-old at White Hart Lane to add to an already impressive attacking midfield.
Both Tottenham and Madrid disagree over the price of the Wales international, with chairman Daniel Levy wanting £100m whilst Los Blancos are only willing to part with £86m.
Yet Levy knows that the Spanish giants have previous when it comes to placing collossal bids, having broken the last four world record transfers and new director of football Franco Baldini has recommended Lamela.
The Argentinian youngster is likely to cost in the region of £30m, but Baldini knows the winger well from the Italian’s time at Roma and clearly believes that it would be a sound investment.
The South American certainly has age on his side and having impressed last season in Serie A with 15 goals and five assists in 33 matches, the reputation of Lamela is growing all the time.
Levy is open to the idea of bringing in the Argentina international this summer, as the chairman is realistic enough to realise that if Bale does not go in this transfer window there is every chance the forward will go in 12 months time – by which point Lamela should be settled in the English capital.
