In what could be the latest in a long line of transfer blows to Liverpool, Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka will join Tottenham in the summer, according to the club’s chairman, Ukrainian website Prosport reports.
Liverpool almost completed a deal for the 24-year-old in January, but complications arose, with both clubs blaming each other for the failure to conclude the deal.
Dnipro’s president, Ukrainian billionaire Ihor Kolomoyskyi, has confirmed that a summer move to North London is now the most likely destination for the club’s star player.
“I’m talking with Tottenham President. He wants Konoplyanka. We’re negotiating & may even be close to signing a contract,” he said.
“Liverpool was just some representatives talking on the phone. Talks with Spurs is entirely on another level.”
“If Spurs want Konoplyanka, I’d happily sell. London life is better than Liverpool. Spurs’ interest is strong & advanced,” he concluded.
Despite Liverpool’s excellent on-field form, they’ve struggled badly in the transfer market over the past 12 months, and Spurs have notoriously beaten them to a number of targets. Brendan Rodgers wanted Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson when he first arrived at Anfield, but Spurs managed to sign both ahead of their rivals.
Elsewhere, he’s also missed out on the likes of Willian, Diego Costa and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who have either joined other clubs, or stayed with their current ones.
The Reds could win the title, but it will have very little do with the summer signings of Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto or even Mamadou Sakho.
Spurs are well enforced on the wings, with Nacer Chadli, Aaron Lennon, Christian Eriksen, Andros Townsend, Erik Lamela and Sigurdsson all competing for starts. None of these have truly looked like filling the void left by Gareth Bale however, and Konoplyanka could well be the next wide-man charged with providing the creative thrust the Welshman once did.
Konoplyanka prides himself on his ability to cut in from the left wing and shoot with his right foot. He’s an excellent dribbler, and is very direct once he has the ball at his feet. This term, he’s notched ten goals for Dnipro, including four in the Europa League.
