Spurs will continue their mind-boggling spending with Stephan El Shaarawy swoop…
Tottenham will carry on spending big with a mega move for AC Milan’s Italian forward Stephan El Shaarawy, reports the Mirror.
Andre Villas-Boas spent over £100m in the summer transfer window, bringing in impressive talents like Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho – thanks to the world-record £85m sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
As a result of the Bale deal, Tottenham broke even, and the Spurs hierarchy have assured AVB money is available should he want it – and the young Portuguese boss has earmarked the 20-year-old striker as his no.1 target.
El Shaarawy enjoyed his break though year last season, bagging 19 goals in all competitions. He has already scored once this year, and is rightly regarded as one of the hottest prospects in world football.
With Emanuel Adebayor frozen out by AVB, and with Jermain Defoe likely to leave in January to get the first-team he football he is craving before next summer’s World Cup – Spurs could be left with Soldado as the only recognised striker at the club, meaning a move for El Shaarawy could be a necessity rather than a luxury.
He can also play from a wider position, so would be a versatile option coming from the bench, as he can play in three or four attacking positions.
Due to his talent though, he would command an astronomical fee, probably close to £30m, that would unlikely be paid back immediately by on pitch performances.
Whether AVB and Spurs decide the huge investment is worth the risk remains to be seen.
