Tottenham Hotspur head coach Andre Villas-Boas says that Gareth Bale should now be bracketed in the same league as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

The Wales international scored a brace on Saturday to help beat Newcastle United 2-1 at White Hart Lane, the playmaker’s 12th and 13th Premier League goals of the season, and the Portuguese has no doubts that the North Londoners must keep hold of the player beyond this summer if they wish to carry on challenging at the top of the table.
“You have to hang on to your best players,’ said Villas-Boas after the match. “Barcelona losing Messi or Real Madrid losing Ronaldo would be a disaster. But there are no release clauses in English football so it is very difficult to negotiate with Tottenham, as you know.
“We are not willing to let our best assets go and we can’t keep talking about this every time he does well. Everybody should be happy just to enjoy a player like this.
