Still it rumbles on towards an inevitable conclusion.
As the transfer window enters its last week the most prominent deal of the summer – Gareth Bale’s proposed move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid – appears to be entering the final moves.
The Telegraph reports that a world record £86m deal for the Welshman will be completed in the very near future.
However, rumours circulating from White Hart Lane that a second club has placed a bid for Bale has sent negotiations spiraling into chaos once more.
The feeling is that the only likely candidates this could possibly be are Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.
According to speculation, United are the most likely buyers but would have to shell out an astronomical £125m to convince Tottenham to sell to a Premier League rival.
Yet there is also the feeling that this story has been fabricated by Spurs in order for shrewd negotiator Daniel Levy to squeeze a few more pounds out of Madrid.
According to the Mirror the Spurs chairman has grown frustrated by the Spanish giants and the club’s tactics during the saga
Los Blancos are treading a very narrow line, as although Bale’s arrival – seemingly done in their eyes shown by the building of a presentation stage at the Santiago Bernabeu and the “accidental” publication of the 24-year-old’s name on the club’s website – it could also upset the current senior stars.
This would most prominently include Cristiano Ronaldo, who would be undermined if the Wales international became the new world record transfer.
Ronaldo is yet to sign a new deal in the Spanish capital and has been constantly linked with a return to Old Trafford.
Expect this story to go right up until deadlines day as a battle of wits waits to see who is the first to break, Tottenham or Madrid.
