Steve Clarke wants to sign Spurs’ striker Jermaine Defoe, and Sunderland attacker Stephane Sessegnon…
West Brom have made Tottenham’s England striker Jermaine Defoe their no.1 target before the transfer window closes on Monday evening, reports the Mirror.
The Baggies are desperate to bring in Defoe, and are willing to pay Tottenham’s £6m valuation for the striker. The 30-year-old is a fans’ favourite at White Harte Lane, but following the arrival of Roberto Soldado for £26m, and a whole host of brilliant attacking midfielders, Defoe is unlikely to get the game time he desires in the run up to next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Newcastle and Stoke are also interested, but only West Brom seem willing to match the forward’s £65,000-a-week wages. Defoe bagged 11 in the league last term, and 15 in all competitions, and Baggies manager Steve Clarke believes he will provide the extra quality his team badly needs, now last season’s star player Romelu Lukaku has returned to Chelsea following a loan spell.
If Defoe proves unattainable, West Brom will move for Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon, who despite being a key player last season, has fallen down Paulo Di Canio’s pecking order following a string of summer recruits.
The Beninese international will also set the Baggies back around £6m, although they could also acquire him on a season long loan.
