Jo-Wilfried Tsonga became the first Frenchman to win the Austrian Open with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-4 win against Juan Martin Del Potro on Sunday.
Tsonga, the top seed, against number two seed Del Potro produced a seventh career title for the French star, who moved into seventh in the race for an ATP year-end finals spot.
He wrapped up victory after nearly two-and-a half hours, sending down 25 aces. Del Potro had won all three of the pair’s previous meetings.
Tsonga’s victory sends him past American Mardy Fish into provisional seventh place for the November 20-27 ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Tsonga added the Vienna honours to the trophy at home in Metz that he claimed last month.
