Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez has been out of coaching since stepping down as the Badgers’ football coach following the 2005 season.

Alvarez recently announced that he will not fire Wisconsin’s hockey head coach, Mike Eaves. He did say that he hopes to see improvement from the team though after a 4-26-5 season.
The 68-year-old athletic director has served as an interim coach for Wisconsin in their bowl games twice after their head coaches accepted jobs elsewhere.
They were unsuccessful in the 2013 Rose Bowl against the heavily favored Stanford, but they upset Auburn in the 2015 Outback Bowl with Alvarez back at the helm.
His 118-73 coaching record included three Rose Bowl victories, and the Badgers have remained a strong football program since his stint.
He took over after Bret Bielema left for Arkansas and Gary Andersen left for Oregon State.
As a result of his interim stints, Alvarez became the joke of Twitter users as Wisconsin is entering the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed with Bo Ryan in his 14th season as their basketball coach. Here are a few of these jokes.
I almost didn’t recognize Barry Alvarez because he wasn’t trying to make himself the coach.

It is crazy that Barry Alvarez is in Omaha for Wisconsin’s game because you know he tried to be Alabama’s interim coach for the NIT. — Walker Carey (@walkerRcarey) March 21, 2015
