England’s selectors were made to look very foolish this morning as Ben Stokes made a brilliant 77 with the bat on his Big Bash debut for the Melbourne Renegades.
The 23-year-old came in a number three and went hard straight away, smashing eight fours and five sixes in a brilliant 37-ball innings against the Hobart Hurricanes.
Stokes seems to thrive in Australian conditions. He was England’s star performer on their last trip Down Under.
However, Stokes has not been included in England’s 15-man squad for the upcoming World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
As Stokes was dismantling the Hurricanes bowlers, the Cricket Universe took to Twitter to express their horror at his World Cup omission.
Here are the best of the tweets:
.@benstokes38 is a star in the making. He’s showing it this eve! Good on him! I cannot for the life of me believe he’s not in WC. #BBL04

If you bat @benstokes38 at number 8 he’ll bat like a number 8. If you bat him at 3 he’ll win you games #superstar
