England captain Wayne Rooney made history by breaking his country’s goalscoring record in their Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland tonight.
He scored his 50th goal, which breaks the record previously held by former Manchester United star Sir Bobby Charlton, in the 2-0 victory at Wembley.
Rooney took advantage of a penalty awarded for a foul against Raheem Sterling to seal the win for the Three Lions on 84 minutes after Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane scored the first goal of the game.
Although Rooney has struggled during the beginning of the 2015-16 season with United, he has cemented his status as an English football legend even further after breaking a record that stood for 45 years.
Although not everyone has greeted’s Rooney iconic moment with joy, he got a large amount of praise from fans and fellow footballers on Twitter this evening. Here is some of the cheerful reaction…
