After Root posted 121 off 108 balls to help England to 309 for 6 in their 50 overs, it appeared as though their competitive total would give them a strong chance of giving their hopes of progressing a huge boost.
However, Sri Lanka hit back with centuries from Lahiru Thirimanne and Kumar Sangakkara, the former hitting an unbeaten 139 while Sangakkara went 117 not out to seal the victory with 16 balls to spare.
Captain Eoin Morgan blamed the side’s bowlers after their thrashing as they were picked off at will, but there were also missed opportunities in the field as Thirimanne was dropped twice.
After the Sri Lankans made a mockery of the run chase, Twitter naturally reacted to England’s woes and it wasn’t too kind on Morgan’s team.
