But the reaction on Twitter to Rooney’s record-breaking goal was more mixed than you might expect.
Naturally, Rooney’s haters were among the first to complain that the Manchester United captain had surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton as England team’s all-time leading scorer.
@TeleFootball here we bloody go #overated bored of listening how world class he is. Sorry no way near world class. #press love in

Others were critical of the 29-year-old’s tendency to show up on the international stage, but not in big games for United:
Rooney is shocking he never steps up in the big games so what if he scored most how many have been important ????????
— Chet Johnson… (@Chet_Sket) September 8, 2015
Just imagine how many goals Rooney would have if he actually performed at the big tournaments!

But in the end, haters gonna hate…
#Rooney never forgiven him for slagging fans off who’d flown half way across the world to see him fail to make a 10 yd pass against Turkey

May have the record but never performed at a tournament and scored few against quality sides. A poor mans @GaryLineker #Rooney
