Uruguay will kick off their World Cup campaign without star striker Luis Suarez as they take on Costa Rica in Group D on Saturday evening.
The Liverpool forward had a superb season at club level and will still be working hard in hope of appearing for his country later in this summer’s tournament, though the South American nation will for now look to Paris Saint-Germain front-man Edinson Cavani for inspiration as they look to get off to a winning start in Brazil.
There is another Premier League connection as Arsenal youngster Joel Campbell will likely start for Costa Rica this evening, and he will have plenty to prove to those watching after spending the last three seasons out on loan from the north London giants.
With England and Italy taking points off each other in the later kickoff, it is vital for two-time World Cup winners Uruguay to pick up three points in this more winnable fixture of the group, as they will no doubt face a tight race in their quest to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Still, with other big names such as Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin and former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan in their ranks, they will feel they can progress far this year if they do get through this difficult group.
