Celia Sasic had a great opportunity to break the deadlock in the second half, but the German star sent her spot kick wide as the Americans breathed a big sigh of relief.
Having dominated the first half, the USA were unable to make the most of it with star striker Alex Morgan guilty of missing a great opportunity to give her team the lead.
However, she was instrumental in the opening goal even though replays showed that she was fouled outside the area before Lloyd stepped up and slotted home from the spot.
That gave the USA the advantage and as the Germans pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they left themselves exposed at the back which ultimately led to some great build-up play from Lloyd who then squared it for Kelley O’Hara to double the lead and seal the win.
USA will now await the winner of the second semi-final which takes place on Wednesday between Japan and England, but they will certainly be confident of ending their World Cup drought after another solid performance.
While the likes of Morgan and Lloyd will undoubtedly receive most of the plaudits, defensive pairing Becky Sauerbrunn and Julie Johnston were highly impressive along with the combative midfield with the likes of Morgan Brian and Tobin Heath playing key roles in the victory.
