Nicks appeared to be a Pro Bowl-caliber wide receiver early in his career with the New York Giants as he reached 1,000 yards in 2010 and 2011 while catching 11 touchdown passes in 2010.
Injuries began to hinder his career though, and a poor 2013 season from Giants quarterback Eli Manning contributed to him being unable to catch a single touchdown pass.
The Giants let him go in free agency before he took on a secondary role in the Colts offense, and he would likely assume a similar role with the 49ers.
The 49ers have signed Baltimore Ravens free agent Torrey Smith to a five-year contract, and he will be their primary deep threat as Anquan Boldin continues to be their other starter.
Journeyman Jerome Simpson was recently signed by the 49ers, and they have youngsters such as Bruce Ellington waiting in the wings, so it will be difficult for Nicks to earn a roster spot if he is signed.
The 49ers offense faces question marks with quarterback Colin Kaepernick coming off a disappointing season and head coach Jim Harbaugh leaving for Michigan.
